This past week end was the Weatern Maryland Blues Fest in Hagerstown MD. It was a real nice time too! Friday the gig opened up with Mr. John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers. What a show, Lots of older stoned eyes in that crowd. Everyone was full of the soulful feeling created by Mr. Mayall. That guy is in his 60's too! Long white ponytail. Still sound great. The man is a legend! I have to show him all respect his many, many years of playin the blues deserves. They shut down the the down town section on Friday and it was one big party. Everyone was cool too. Mr Gatemouth Brown was the closing show. Awesome, purely awesome performer. The mans still has the chops too! I was in Hippland Chat last night and I have to say, I was very disappointed. All I heard was fighting, dirty jokes which people LIKED (this is not about being prudish - dirty jokes are usually a put down of SOMEONE), a guy with the screen name porno something came in (real hippies weren't into porno, they didn't need to be!), and "F" this and "F" that was often spoken. While hippies did swear, they really had a larger purpose in life than to pick on each other. I hear so much about how the 90s hippies are just wannabe hippies. I llike to think they don't have to be that way, but after last night I sure am let down. If we had Internet and a hippie chat room back than we would have used it to organize peace marches, help a friend get out of an abusive situation, find someone a job, talk about college (hippies were EDUCATED), discuss politics or the war (and we ARE in a war right now - doesn't anybody care?), and of course, just hang. But not the way it is being used now. Sure a lot of people want to be a hippie because it is fun, but part of that fun was a feeling of responsibility we had toward the world, toward each other, and a willingness to loan a hand. It wasn't just "all for us and our fun." We CARED about each other, and about the world. THAT was fun. Caring feels good. It means getting involved too. One thing we learned is that we did not want to be like our parents who often said, "I don't want to get involved." We WANTED to get involved, so please you guys, loan a hand and help your hippie friends. Get involved. And it remains true that even in the 60s there were some hippie wannabe's who did not meet up all this, they just happened to be born during that era but did not have the correct consciousness. They just wanted to exploit and enjoy each other. But there were others who wanted to make a difference, to change the world. Even if we didn't do it completely, no one can say what we did had no effect! In my humble opinion, I believe the Viet Nam war would have lasted longer had we not protested. Also, many of the youth take free speech for granted. Oh, we all had free speech to a degree, but the things you guys can say at the drop of a hat were not *allowed* to say in our times. I am not tlaking about legally, I am speaking about socially. We were put down for telling it like it is. Although let us not take it to the extreme and think free speech means potty mouth. :) We changed free speech and the youth can now say things they normally would not have been *allowed* to.. So please do not misuse your free speech to waste time with "F" this and "F" that. Understand that this word isn't really about sex, it is about violence. Instead, let's change the world, peacefully! And also, let's stop all the fighting that goes on in hippie chat and learn how to agree to disagree. :) Everyone wants peace, so why do the modern day hippies fight so much?
