Why do we see something we admire and then pin it's name on ourselves? A name can mean many things but does it really mean "me"? I agree that actions speak louder than words. People may tell you your not legit, they may tell you that you are a poser but what are they talking about? They are talking about a stereotype. An eastern book of philosophy says that if you can name an idea then you do not understand the idea, but you can know the idea and not name it. Be true to yourself, not to the that name. Eat meat if you like meat. Chop down trees if you like. Don't do drugs if you don't want to. Fight the name and define yourself. True friends and peers will respect you because you respect yourself and because you want to define yourself. Increase your perception and learn to act upon your intuition, then you will know what to do. I'm not trying to preach. I'm just a feller frustrated with the name. The search for identity is difficult. I just want us all to define ourselves. Remember, a way of life is not something that one just "tries out." It is something that your body and spirit tells you is true. Identity is not a look. Its not how you talk or what you pretend to represent. It's something that you can't hide from yourself. Don't lie to yourself. Does anyone else want to look for themselves or do we all just want to fit into the cake mold? Laterz all. I can't relate with many of my these "new" type of young people that have been spearding like some virus all over america, you know who I'm talking about these "new" type of young people who go to school just so they can graduate and say they did it all "for their carrear", who are so bland and boring so none stoned (or should I say enlightend), who dress and talk just like a television show, who base people on wealth, etc. etc. I can't stand it any more. I don't feel like getting a job ever. I just want to live. I just want to listen to music all day. I just wanna lay in the sun. I wanna have friends I can just run away on the road with and use mother earth candies (pot, hash, mushrooms, etc.) in a spiritual way not a party animal frat boy way. I wanna girl who will be by my side, who will be my best friend, who I can lay and roll in the grass with, who I can fly a kite with, who I can share with etc. Who else out their is content with doing nothing but your own thing. Who wants to sing, who wants to make music, who wants to drum, who wants to hum. What happend to the communes of yesterday, not these little normal sober communes of today. I wanna see the golden dawns of Texas, I wanna see the snows in Detroit, I wanna hit the street in NYC, I wanna see the sunny rays of California, I wanna see the sands of Arizona etc. I wanna fall in love with someone who know what real love and friendship is all about. Yes, I wanna do it all before I get old. I believe in the old ways of the "hippies" of the late 60's and early 70's over the stereotyped stoner and confused hippie that was created during the late 70's and is still alive today. When I first got to this campus I was very quickly labeled a "hippie" because perhaps my way of dressing would superficially deem me so. I wasn't necessarily angered by it - I object to all forms of stereotypes, but being a "hippie" at least isn't a very bad one. Well, if you're going to be one who stereotypes, or someone who clings to the sixties defining word, I guess I am a "hippie". I don't think the term is bad, I just don't choose to be defined by it. I am many, many things. I don't call myself a hippie, because I believe that I am the total of my beliefs, practices, and traits, not a word. I remember reading a web-site that said that "hippies" have always existed, and that have never been defined by a certain style of dress, or speech. It's the philosophy, not the look. I can't agree more. I am in love with the Earth, I wear cotton and hemp clothing - skirts and gauzy shirts, I wear beads, I wear sandals and All-Stars, I recycle, I promote peace and understanding among all the peoples of the human race, I listen to "hippie" music among other things, I play the guitar, I have really long hair, I don't wear makeup, I prefer oils to perfume, I like incense, I philosophize a lot, I'm a very spiritual person. All these things supposedly define me as a "hippie". I guess that's understandable. But 1) I am not that narrow (meaning there's more to me than just those things),and 2) if I were to define myself as a "hippie" I would get censored from people: "If you're a hippie, why do you eat chicken sometimes?" "If you're a hippie, why don't you walk everywhere you go?" "If you're a hippie, how come you like to shower everyday?. "If you're a hippie, why do you like rap music?" And the list goes on. These questions would come from both "hippies" and non-"hippies" alike. In fact, I've found that a lot of the kids who flaunt their "hippie-ness" are some of the most judgemental, rigid, cliques I have encountered (not saying that most people entitled "hippie" are that way). If you don't play the game, you're a sell-out. What? I think they're missing the point of it all. I have a voting card, a driver's license, and a sexy evening gown. If people limit themselves and others by dishing out titles, then how is true understanding, peace, love, and equality going to happen? We need to start paying attention to people's spirits, not whether they bought or made their clothing. P.S. I am most certainly not degrading or devaluing the many wonderful people who like to be known as hippies. This is purely my own philosophy. Some of the truest "hippies" just don't give a censored WHAT they're called. And that's right on. (smile). I just want people to look past the word and see the person, because the person should define him/herself - the word shouldn't define the person. In our never-ending search for identity, we have created barriers by insisting on labelling ourselves a certain 'type' of person. Just looking through the profiles and messages here, it is clear that everyone has a different idea of what being a real 'hippie' involves. Some think it's a pair of bellbottoms and a silky embroidered shirt, others think it involves experimental sex and ingesting mass quantities of various illegal substances, and still others claim that being a hippie is a state of mind, freedom of expression, peace, tolerance and love. Who is to say what is right? And would anything be solved if there was a solid definition? If not, I hope you enjoy it. :) I was an old hippie of the 60s and 70s. I like the love and peace part but am sad regarding all the damage drugs have done to ourselves and our kids. I think it is unfortunate that the only way most know how to get rid of the parts they don't like is to toss the whole thing. To throw out the baby with the bathwater, basically. It would be nice if we would learn how to take the good and leave the bad. Guess I am kind of sad the real hippie era is over. The 90s hippies just don't seem the same, though I do like them. :) (Nothing personal 90s hippies.) Guess you can never go back. When I was a teenager I wanted to rebel against the establishment, it was so materialist. My parents, being very conservative, freaked out. So I was forced to keep quite, but it didn't really work. LOL I kept listening to the music (Bob Dyaln, George Harrison, etc.), put up a small hand made poser in my room that said "Protest". They really hated that. I went to one day of Woodstock. Couldn't spend the night since I was underage and not allowed, but I still feel it was just good to be there. Got to be positive. :) I eventually moved out, to my parents dismay, and was happy to be on my own. I went to college, got a job - very independent natured. :) At first I lived in town, it was a college town filled with hippies. So it was nice. College during the day, cool people later. Than I moved to a more rural area. Lived in a bungalow colony. Almost everyone there was a hippie. All except the old man who lived in the first bungalow, but he was OK with us. There was a river there and we would go swim in it in the summer. Woods behind me. So beautiful. Than I moved to a different bungalow colony since that one was closing down. The second one in some ways wasn't as nice, but the people I met were even better. Anyway, the landlord had this cow who he planned to kill. We felt so sorry for it. He kept it chained and a few of us said, "What if we just unchained it. Than at least it could run away and have a chance." But someone who had lived there longer said, "The cow has gotten loose by accident and all she does is follow the goats around. " Kind of cute, yet sad since she didn't know enough to leave. Now a days, you can be a vegetarian, and not miss meat, there are many substitutes, there are tofu hot dogs, veggie burgers, enchiladas, etc.. This cruelty towards animals needs to be put to an end. I was a vegetarian for quite some time, and just recently became a vegan. Anyone with a heart and conscience should stop eating meat now. The cruelty brought on to animals, only reinforces to our generation, and to the generations to come that violence is okay. And it is not okay. It is not okay to kill something that is capable of breathing and thinking and moving, all things that humans are capable of. We are supposed to be the most intelligent race, yet look at us. We are all full of shit, all of us incapable of living in peace. Then you watch animals, all of whom are capable of living in harmony. The way that these animals are treated and slaughtered is not only inhumane, but is also morally wrong. Most carnivores are either unaware or uncaring of the condition of these animals. I could go on forever about this subject, but i just wanted to say to all meat eaters, there is hope, and everyone should try to not eat meat on march 20th, and if you make it that day do it for a week, and a month, and a year, and you would be doing great things for the cause of these animals. Hello everyone,domestic and abroad.I am presently in the quiet and beautiful town of Chemainus B.C. canada.The people arent that bad here,but it takes a while for them to except change.I find that being kind and laid back with everyone usually gets them into a relaxed state and they open up to me more.I like to travel as much as possible and fancy myself a nomad of sorts.Depending on the time of year.The summers are absolutely gorgious here but the winters are wet and leave something to be desired.I am a 15 year old male,attending the local high school and thankfully deal with people quite well.Im about 5'10 at about 140 lbs. dark brown hair which i am presently growing long.Soooooo slooow.Anyways, Im open to most kinds of music but lean towards relaxed music and the occasional metal fest.I believe in comfort above all else because hey! comfort is happiness.I have a complicated mind and have a taste for long and satisfying conversation with someone having a reasonable intallect.I know what your thinking.Gee.This guy sounds boring.But honestly Im much better face to face.I dont restrict relation with people at all.so if you want to e-mail me and are interested in what i might have to say along the lines of this restricting world we live in,dont hesitate to write. I'm 16 and have been interested in the hippie culture for many years now. I would very much like to become a hippy but i don't really know how. I live in Brunei, in south east Asia, and we don't get much news from the rest of the world. When I go beck to Melbourne, were I am originally from, I see hippies and I just want to be them. I too am an "Old Hippy" and would like to know if there is any place an "old hippy" can go to locate "old hippy friends". I lived in Haight Ashbury from August 1967 to February 1969. I lived at 1669 Haight Street in the Third Eye Bookstore Commune, right across from the Straight Theater and downstairs from the Haight Hotel, for the last 11 months I was there. Dr. Roland Ramses was the "leader" of the commune at the time. I remember the hot summer evenings at the Blue Unicorn or standing in line to get into the Filmore. The Straight Theater had some good concerts CHEAP, for those of us with no money for entertainment. The RED MOUNTAIN WINE was consumed, literally, by the gallons there. I remember with great fondness baking bread in old coffee cans with the "Diggers" for Christmas dinner. Those where great times. I left when I did to become part of the "hippy" scene in Detroit, Michigan for a number of years before moving to Columbus, Ohio to attend OSU and become part of the radical student body protesting the war. Since then I have become an "Old Married Hippy" with 3 beautiful daughters and 2 beautiful grand kids. I now live in Cincinnati, Ohio and work for General Electric Aircraft Engines. Up until last year I still had a shoulder length pony tail and beard. When I turned fifty I made a choice and cut it all off, bummer. Oh well we all get old and our outward appearances may change but as long as our inward self stays the same it's okay. Anyway, I would really love to locate some of my old friends that I lived with, had sex with and got high with. Where can I go to try and find them. I probably still have old mail waiting to be picked up at the "Switchboard". Peace and Love,

CMWelli007@aol.com HELLO!! i'm a twelve yr' old hippy brother (13 in a month) named jesse. i luv muzik like the dead, rusted root, csny, phish, and lot's others!! i also luv readin' old beat n hippy stuff like ken kesey, jack kerouac, allen ginsberg, gary snyder, and lot's others (i'm in the middle of readin' this really kewl book by Elia Katz called Armed Love, it's really good, i also just finnished ken keseyd The Further Inquiery, a must read!!) here where i go to school (long island ny) there are like no hippies, so it really sux. i get real lonely, at school kids make fun of me for likin' the dead and bein' a hippy (and wearing the same pair of pants every day) though i've got lot's of freinds (one of them's sorta into hippies n far out stuff, from me) but most of them are gurls (not that i mind that.... at all!!) but it aint easy bein' different, i know from experience. i know it can be areal pain in the ass, that it makes it hard to find phreinds who share u'r thoughts, that it's hard to find love, but like i still don't regret, i like bein' different, even if it can really suck some times. i wouldn't wanna be anyone but me. i like myself (in a screwed up way) so anyway, if ya wanna chat (specifically gurlz from 12 to 14, but i'll chat with anyone, girl or guy, 5-20!!!!) much love, jesse Beatnik101@aol.com

If anyone is looking for something groovy to do this summer I thought I might mention about a festival that happens every year, and it's one of the grooviest little things you'll ever experience. All right, well it's called the Hillside Festival and the 1999 Hillside Festival is taking place in a little town called Guelph in Ontario, Canada. Now this festival caters to both local artists and big time artists. Last years headliners were Bruce Cockburn, Yakudo (A drumming group from Japan), Kinnie Starr, Wild Strawberries (I know) and all sorts of others. There is also activities like making necklaces, tie-dying, psychic healing, meditation, and environmental awareness. Every morning there is a drumming circle led by this groovy man from Africa, if you don't have your own drum you can borrow one. And every night on the island there is a big party where you can camp out, get high, and just mellow out by the lake, the fire, or the field.
