Hmmm, my ol' man sez I wuz always more of a druggie than a hippie and I don't think I found my real people till the sex pistols came out...but I was in high school in '69 and lately I've been wonderin' where all those fancy free boyz n gurls of my youth went...they sure don't live in my neighborhood. Well, there is the president of a local biker group, but he's more of a long haired redneck....I think that ultimatly hippies were killed by their own consumerism, drawn in by the lure of the magic Visa card. Me I live in a tiny cold little house on a large plot of urban forest, and it's paid for and mortage free, and yet I am generally looked down on by those with mortages. I grow my own veggies and compost, and have my own little sacred grove for dancing in the moon light. I like music from then and music from now and and points in between. My ol' man wears patchouli which I think of as the solem and joyous scent that perfumed Aslan's mane--for those of you who've read CS Lewis. I have traveled, but not as much as I would like yet. I have a couple of grandkids who call me granny and 2 dogs, and this computer. I don't eat anything that used to have a face--if I wouldn't eat it raw it has no business in my mouth. I like to read, to draw, to cook and to--well never mind about that. I'm fourty four. I would like to go on this big world trip, spend all my retirement money and then committ double suicide with my husband before we get old and sick, but he doesn't see the logic in this--so maybe murder suicide is in order--just kidding babies. Message: I wanted to write to let you know how I feel. I am nineteen years old, and I just recently begun to embrace the hippie philosophy. It started my freshman year of college when I took a course on the 60's that changed my life. I then began to read a lot of Jack Kerouac works, which I strongly recomend to everyone. These two influences changed my outlook on life, but now it's even harder for me, because although I now know what I am and who I was meant to be, I have no one to share it with. My friends that I have known all my life are not like me and they do not understand. I don't dress lke a hippie, so I don't easily fit in with many of the so called hippies we all see roaming around. A lot of kids today just play the part without believing in it. There are many kids today that probably believe more strongly in peace, love, and freedom in the strongest sense, that do not fit in with the traditional "hippie" groups because they don't dress a certain way or act a certain way. I give everyone credit for how you feel, and hope you find your way. Lastly, just because ouur generation doesn't have a Vietnam, we do have war, we do have poverty, we do have disease, we do have environmental destruction, we do have oppression, and the society we live in has the same set ideals and standards that Americans have always had. Maybe us self proclaimed hippies do not want to live the way we are "supposed" to or "think" the way our parents told us too, maybe our reasons are just as good as the original peoples of the sixties. We have plenty of good cause to make a statement and to try to make the world a better place through peace, love, and freedom.

Message: I am not a hippie. I don't dress like the stereotypical hippie, I don't act like a stereotypical hippie, and I don't look like the stereotypical hippie. Then what am I? A question I have asked my self alot lately. Reading your post remindes me of Woodstock '99, as I sat there, in front of the TV, watching it burn, watching everyone scream out in hate and rage. How did this happen? How did Woodstock go from peace, love, and happiness to a hatefest? It seems that in our generation peace, love, and happiness has given away to hate, money, and a struggle for power. I am only 15 and have been lied to and misled for the better part of my life. I've been taught to "love" money, and to "love" competion, this is because everyone is on a quest for happiness and they think that money will bring this to them. Which is a lie. People have lost faith in their religons making their life seem pointless, they need somewhere to go, something to shoot for, they choose money. They've been led astray, they will never be happy. I am only 15, I don't know the "right path", but I do know that almost all religons, almost all philosophys focus on one thing, loving EACH OTHER. That I feel is the key to being happy. I am not a hippie, just a kid with a computer who thinks it's a bout time that society takes a look at self and realizes that its time for a change.

I mean, I listen to some Phish and Grateful Dead and moe. and stuff. I do like the clothing and everything, too. I am completely against things like animal cruelty and don't eat meat myself. What I really like about you guys, though, is that you all seem to have the same beliefs as me. You all seem so spiritual and just really awakened by the every-changing and evolving earth. Message: So really hear me out. In 1973 I was touring with the Dead. Right before the show my brothers and sisters and I ate some acid to make the music more "Lively". So we are at the concert and I decide to eat a little mushrooms(a quater). We are all dancing to the music, and having a good time. After the show there was a big gathering with a camp fire and lots of drugs. I was a little hesitant to shoot up heroin, but I did because it was the 70's and people were into that sort of thing then. So That was it and I died that night. But now here I am in this life still stuck in the damn 60's, and I can't get out. Everything I do, wear, eat, sleep, drink, and the music that I listent to is all there. Sometimes I'll be drivin down the road, in my green VW bus, and I will see all the cars around me old mustangs, and bugs, and those cute little 50's cars too. And I'll be listening to the oldies station on my 8-track(just kidding). Anyway. I guess I am a weirdo or something, huh? So, anyone down for a road-trip? Lets get together and have fun. I really do think though That I am so there because I died too early in my past life. Maybe, Maybe not, but it sure s a good story.
