Bootleg Records (1970)

Madison (WI) has seen a rash of bootleg records-most sold at super high prices-and the gigantic profits going to who knows who.

Now, however, some of us who feel that freak-rock belongs to the people from where it came, have liberated Dylan and Beatles tapes and returned the music to the people.

Here’s the story,

The Beatles recorded a whole bunch of songs for their soon-to-be released Got Back album which will come out when they get their movie (also called Got Back ) finished. The tapes we acquired were the cuts that were excluded from the commercial Get Back LP.

The three Dylan cuts on the community’s record were recorded live at his recent Isle of Wight concert (his first concert in years) and are really exciting to hear.

As far we know, this is the only bootleg album with anything from the Isle of Wight festival.

So, the money was put up and 1000 records cut, with a possible 1000 more later. The album sells for $3.00 — and every penny except for the cost of manufacture will be returned to the community. The bail fund especially will benefit. The community outlets selling the album receive the proceeds from the sales (IF they need the bread like many co-ops do) or donate their share to the Bail Fund.

This album is a stop toward reclaiming the people’s music from filthy capitalist record companies. And a lot of people are also thinking very seriously about the planned rock festivals for Madison this summer and how to deal with than.

John Sinclair is on the album cover for a purpose. Ten years in jail for two joints is what we’re all about. Dig it?
