Mahatma Gandhi: Once a lawyer in South Africa, Gandhi came to India and fought British oppression through the pioneering use of non-violent protest. His methods were adopted in the 60s by the civil rights and antiwar movements. The confrontative, yet unaggressive techniques are now the standard for peaceful protest.
